Author John Merritt served as a missionary in Europe for 34 years. As his vision grew, so did his influence and witness, which touched all of European Baptist life, eastern and western. Ordained in 1954, Merritt was appointed missionary to Italy in July 1964. He was then elected General Secretary of the European Baptist Convention (EBC) and served from 1972-1996, while living in Germany. Merritt has received many honors in his long career, including a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Campbell University, NC, Elected and served as vice president, European Baptist Federation (EBF), 1989-1991; served as president, EBF, 1991-1993; elected General Secretary Emeritus, EBC, 1998. Merritt is retired and, with his wife Elizabeth, lives in Mississippi and North Carolina. They are the parents of three sons, Michael, Mark (who is deceased) and Philip; and have two grandchildren, John and Nora. He strongly feels his calling for this time in his life of service is to bring attention to the betrayal of Southern Baptists by the fundamentalist leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention, and to the opportunities he sees for the healing of the church. |
