The Betrayal

The hostile takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention and a missionary’s fight for Freedom in Christ

by John W. Merritt

In THE BETRAYAL, pastor, missionary, author and speaker John Merritt has brought to light an ugly truth that can no longer be denied or ignored. When fundamentalists seized control of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1979, they issued an ultimatum to the faithful:

“Like it or Get Out!”

To this day, the ultimatum is forced upon all Southern Baptists—pastors, teachers, theologians, men, women, missionaries and Southern Baptist churches.

While many Southern Baptists have followed the fundamentalist leaders with full devotion and loyalty, others, including numerous pastors who were trained in Southern Baptist institutions, have left the SBC and now pastor churches in other denominations. Other disenfranchised Southern Baptists have established 12 new theological schools and a new missionary sending agency, and have implemented other means to cooperation and obedience to the Great Commission of Christ.

The Betrayal makes a compelling case, using clear, strong, and timely examples, that the Southern Baptist Convention is in desperate need of new leadership, including new trustees, new heads of boards, seminaries and agencies. All of these should know the difference between good and evil and courageously practice the good.

How does the belief of the SBC fundamentalist leaders differ from the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Divisive SBC fundamentalist leaders have led the SBC into chaos, confusion and division. They are now planning to take their division into all the world.

In the book and in his discussions with churches, Merritt:

  • Unveils their distortion of the theory of biblical inerrancy (makes the theory an idol)
  • Traces their march toward authority over the SBC
  • Documents their deception in foreign missions
  • Presents 10 arguments that their movement is another gospel, despite a warning against this very thing by the apostle Paul in Galatians*
  • Appeals to churches to study their movement under the scrutiny of Scriptures
  • Makes five proposals to churches to enable them to regain their autonomy under the authority of Christ
  • Offers a new vision for a new future for Southern Baptists

Calls for churches to "Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches"

* I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! Galatians 1: 6-9 NIV
