About this book

The idea for this cookbook was birthed sharing food with my two creative friends, Toby Brown and Marcia Tibbetts, who connect Holy Ground with many good things, including good food. They suggested the idea of a cookbook organized by Enneagram type as a fundraiser. The cookbook took off from there. I am grateful to them for their friendship and their support in shaping this project.

This cookbook pulls together several of my passions: food, the Enneagram, and spiritual pilgrimmage. Sharing delicious food in good company has always been a holy experience for me. Tasting and eating good, healthy food can ground us in the present and reconnect us with ourselves and our bodies. When we dine together and are present to the meal and the moment, food can be powerfully transformative. It brings us to our senses so to speak, with aromas, tastes and textures. Anyone who has seen the film Babette’s Feast will remember the dinner scene when neighborhood grudges melted away as hardened hearts were softened and stubborn minds opened by the exquisite and generous meal prepared by Babette. Community is birthed and rebirthed around the table as we feast.

When we receive food we connect with the earth, the elements and with other humans. Those who plow and plant, harvest and transport, as well as those who cook and serve, all make the meal possible. Many hands and many forces feed us. How can we not be grateful?

The recipes are offered by people who love to eat and most of whom love to cook. With a few exceptions, the recipes are simple and the preparation time is reasonable. Many of those who contributed recipes have studied and worked with the Enneagram, using it for greater self awareness. In addition to offering recipes, each contributor graciously agreed to offer a glimpse into their personal life, responding to my request to share about their own spiritual development through the lens of their Enneagram type. These thoughts follow each of their recipe contributions. I offer sincere thanks to the contributors for their thoughtfulness and honesty as they shared from the heart.

Unlike other cookbooks that are organized by recipe types—-appetizers, entrées, salads, soups, desserts—-this book is organized by Enneagram personality types. So a dessert may be on the same page as a salad. To find particular kinds of food, use the index at the back of this book. In keeping with Holy Ground’s desire to be earth friendly, this book is printed on 50% recycled and 30% post-consumer paper stock.

This book would not have been possible without the devoted efforts of two friends, Karla Goethe and Robbin Brent Whittington. Karla, owner of Orchard Wind Graphics, organized, formatted and composed the pages of the cookbook. Robbin, book publisher and owner of R.Brent and Company, added her design touches and publisher expertise as she worked with the printer to bring this project to fruition.

The artwork on the cover of this book is titled “The Best Supper” and was created by artist and author Jan L. Richardson. Jan donated this piece of art to Holy Ground in 1998 and it is displayed on the mantle in Holy Ground’s gathering room. I am grateful to Jan for allowing us to use this for our cover art and for the many ways she continues to support Holy Ground. Readers interested in Jan’s art can see more of her work in her books, Night Visions, United Church Press, Cleveland, Ohio © 1998 and In Wisdom’s Path, The Pilgrim Press, Cleveland, Ohio, © 2000.

Also, I want to acknowledge Dr. David Daniels and Helen Palmer, with whom I began my studies of the Enneagram. They create safe space for people to explore who they are, and they continue to nurture my own personal growth through their respectful teaching, skill and expertise, and patience. Their teachings are reflected in the pages of Enneagram material contained in this book.

I invite you to gather friends around the table and give these delicious recipes a try. Explore the Enneagram as a tool for personal growth and greater self awareness. The material makes for rich table conversation.

May your feasting be delicious, may it nourish your body and soul, and may good food connect you to the holy ground of your being.
