It is hoped that The Ultimate Guide to Asheville & the Western North Carolina Mountains will be just that. A complete resource for you as you visit our area, one that will allow you to make an informed decision as to what you wish to see and do during your stay. Besides being comprehensive in scope and highly factual as any good guidebook should be, The Ultimate Guide is unique in that it is filled with pen and ink illustrations that accompany the text. These highly detailed illustrations should also help you to make the right choices for your visit. A picture can be worth a thousand words! I have tried to organize the material in the book into logical sections to help you in thinking about what to do. Section One, “Getting Acquainted,” will provide you with an overview as well as vital and useful information to make your stay a successful one. Section Two, “The Best of Asheville, Hendersonville & Flat Rock,” not only presents my personal selections and favorites but also covers topics of interest to all visitors, from accommodations and restaurants to art and crafts galleries to outdoor recreation. As a longtime resident who lives and works in this area, I am very confident in providing this vital information and very comfortable in making any recommendations, since these come from my firsthand knowledge. Sections Three and Four present the major attractions and things to see and do in “Asheville, All-America City” and “Hendersonville & Flat Rock.” Section Five presents the major attractions in all of “Western North Carolina,” realizing that you may wish to stay in Asheville or Hendersonville and venture out into the surrounding mountains on day trips. I have tried to include in this guidebook everything that would be of interest to visitors. Many of the attractions and features included are very popular and well advertised. Some however are not as well known but just as worthy. It is hoped that my experience of living and working in the Asheville and Hendersonville area has enabled me to do it right, so to speakto write a guidebook that really is thorough and accurate, not just one that provides superficial or limited information from the perspective of a nonnative. One of the most delightful surprises along the way, and one I hope you will discover for yourself, is the wonderful friendliness of the many people who work at the places highlighted in The Ultimate Guide to Asheville & the Western North Carolina Mountains. There is such a thing as “Southern Hospitality!” The people of the mountains, those whose families have lived here for generations and those who have just arrived, are the true treasures. There are truly beautiful and inspiring places to visit in the mountains, but the folks who greet you at the door make it all the better. Lee James Pantas, 2000 |
