About the Author

The Rev. Petty is an Episcopal priest. Prior to retirement in 1998, he was a parish clergyman; pastoral counselor in Northern Virginia and D.C.; a member and, later, chair of the Diocesan Commission on AIDS Ministry; founding board member of northern Virginia AIDS ministry; a member of the Rapid Response Team for the Diocesan clergy sexual misconduct task force; a volunteer therapist for the Whitman-Walker Clinic in D.C.; a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors; and was on the staff of the Pastoral Counseling and Consultation Centers of Greater Washington.

Father Petty holds degrees from George Washington University and Virginia Theological Seminary (M.Div.). He completed his clinical pastoral residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He is founding Vicar of St. Francis Church, Great Falls, Virginia.

Fr. Petty is living in retirement with his wife, Nancylee, in Black Mountain, North Carolina. They have two grown sons. Since moving to the mountains of Western North Carolina, they have attended Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Asheville.
